Dr. Endra Gunawan, S.T., M.Sc. Wins RIIM Award 2024 for Groundbreaking Disaster Mitigation Research

The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), in collaboration with the Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP), presented the prestigious "Research and Innovation for Advanced Indonesia (RIIM) Award 2024" to outstanding researchers who have significantly contributed to scientific and technological innovations. Held on Monday, September 30, 2024, this event aims to recognize research efforts that have a tangible impact on society and promote the commercialization of innovative solutions.

Endra Gunawan, one of the winners in the RIM Competition category, stood out for his research titled “Implementation of Satellite Data for Identifying Active Fault Zones in Java, Sulawesi, and Sumatra as Input for Updating Indonesia’s Seismic Source and Hazard Maps.” His work is regarded as a crucial step in improving disaster mitigation, particularly in updating seismic hazard maps in earthquake-prone areas.

As a researcher from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), Endra leveraged satellite-based data to identify active fault zones across major islands in Indonesia. This research aims to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the geological conditions in seismically vulnerable areas. With a more precise mapping of active fault zones, it is expected that the government and related stakeholders can develop more effective disaster mitigation strategies, thereby reducing the risk of material damage and casualties.

The selection process for the RIIM Award 2024 was rigorous, involving administrative and substantive reviews. Finalists were invited to present their research at the Indonesia Research and Innovation Expo 2024 (INARI Expo) before being officially announced as the winners.

Laksana Tri Handoko, Head of BRIN, expressed his hope that this award will inspire Indonesian researchers to continue producing innovations that contribute significantly to the development of science and technology, as well as the welfare of society. “Currently, the RIIM Award features three main categories, but in the future, these schemes will continue to evolve in line with the increasing demand for research-based innovations,” Handoko stated.

This award not only highlights Endra Gunawan’s achievements in geological research and disaster mitigation but also showcases the potential of academic research and technology utilization in providing tangible benefits to society. Through the RIIM Award 2024, BRIN and LPDP aim to encourage research-based innovations to flourish and play a pivotal role in supporting social and economic development in Indonesia.
